1990 Grand Final Premiers Collingwood Magpies – AFL

It took until the 19 minute mark of the final quarter and a Doug Barwick goal before they'd believe it was true. The pain and frustration from years of failure and near misses was swept away by a tidalwave of happiness as Colingwood had finally won that elusive premiership. Since 1958 the Collingwood masses had endured football's most talked about drought, but in an instant that was forgotten. Having strangled Essendon's supply lines throughout the afternoon Collingwood was always on target. From the moment Peter Daicos kicked one of his freaksih goals in the first term you got the feeling that things were going to fall into place for Collingwood this particular day. The inspiration was provided by Darren Millane. The bullish Magpie wingman was playing with a broken thumb, but he took apart Greg Anderson with a calculated display of power football. Skipper Tony Shaw was by his side, driving the Magpies out of the middle. A player canned so many times for being too slow, too small and lacking in skill was having his brightest moment in a stellar career. These two Collingwood icons carried the rest along and together the Magpies were irrepressible. They controlled the match but it was almost too foreign to beleive. Teams had climbed out of the grave to snatch victory from Collingwood in the past, but it wasn't going to happen this time. Collingwood's moment had finally arrived.
