1978 Grand Final Premiers Hawthorn Hawks – AFL
 
The greatest rivalry of the mid-70's was continued in the Grand Final of 1978 when Hawthorn clashed with North Melbourne once again. Having met in the final match of '75 and '76 these two clubs had created quite a reputation as the league's powerhouses of this era and on paper this looked like being the best of their premiership clashes. It proved to be the case. A flying start by the Hawks was capitalised on and by quarter time they had shot out to a 19 point lead. It was early days, but North looked to be in real trouble. Enter Phill Snake" Baker. North's spearhead hauled in a series of spectacular marks in the 2nd quarter and booted four goals for the term to put the Kangaroos in front at half time. It was an amazing turn around. But just as North had met an early challenge the Hawks refused to buckle and hit back hard in the third term
