1977 Grand Final Premiers North Melbourne – AFL

You can't talk about the Grand Final of '77 without talking about the draw - to this day no-one can believe that North kicked 9.22 to draw that match. The following week was better, but still the Kangaroos proved they found it hard to kick straight. In the end Collingwood's resistance was short lived. North's ascendancy was clear by halftime of the replay, but the Magpies were still in touch. It stayed that way until three quarter time, but after seven tough quarters of Grand Final football something had to give. That something was Collingwood. North had to be stopped in the final quarter, but it was impossible for the midfields and defences of either side to put in that extra effort, such had been the mental and physical pressure they had been put through. The eighth quarter saw North kick six goals and Collingwood seven, with one of those being Phil Manassas memorable running major, but after such an epic test of stamina a five goal break at the last change was always going to be a tough bridge. It was beyond Collingwood and North registered its second premiership success.
