| They don't get much better than this...Carlton and Collingwood, the biggest crowd in AFL history and the premiership on the line. Only thing was, by half time of the 1970 Grand Final the geam was, to all intent purposes, finished. The Magpies, reputedly one of the best sides ever to grace the field in the famous strip, had shot out to a forty four point lead and Carlton was not in the hunt. Having been beaten by Richmond in the previous year's Grand Final, it looked as though the Blues were struck by stage fright all over again. But, with specific instructions delivered by Ron Barassi to handball at all costs ringing in their ears after half-time, Carlton stormed back. Adventure replaced reality and the Blues began playing a brand of football not often seen. They chipped it sideways, they handballed backwards, they often looked like they weere working themselves into trouble, but the most important thing was that they had the football and Collingwood didn't have any idea how to take it from them. That seven goal deficit had been cut to 17 points by the last break anbd the crowd, which had been stunned by Collingwood's first half dominance had suddenly found its vouice. The stage was set for the greatest last quarter in Grand Final history. Only Collingwood supporters and sympathisers were dissapointed. For the rest it proved that anythingis possible, as Carlton continued to press and with a fair haired rover playing one of his twenty nine league games kicking goals from everywherwe, the Blues hit the front. With Alex Jesaulenko and John Nicholls providing great targets, Carlton's fairytale was complete when thwe final siren signalled a ten point Carlton victory. The greatsest come back in Grand Final history was complete. |
