| Richmond signalled its intentions early in the finals series with an 118-point thumping of Geelong in the First Semi-Final. Carlton, the Tiger's eventual foe, entered the Grand Final with an easy win over Collingwood, but there was something special about this Richmond outfit. By half time of the main event Richmond had shown just how good it was. It led by twenty two points and had Carlton coach Ron Barassi struggling. There were so many Tigers playing such significant football, one wondered how Carlton could get back into the match. But such was the quality of this Blue outfit that it kicked six goals to two in the third term to storm back at Richmond, leading by 4 points at the final change. But the effort Carlton had made to get back in did two things : It drained the Blues and it sparked the Tigers into action. Their response was ferocious, clinical and oh, so effective. They dried up the Carlton goalflow, stopped the Carlton prime movers and by the beginning of time-on had restored a two goal break, before goals to Graeme Bond and Kevin Bartlett put the icing on the cake. It was a truly magnificent win by this outstanding football team, but greater glories awaited them, and the Blues. |
